Many of us have never experiences the magical moment of ‘Walking on Water’ as we learn to surf. 5 minutes from The Well House this experience quickly becomes reality. Skilled teachers at several surf schools provide lessons that allow you to experience the incredible freedom of surfing. Even if you have never tried it before.
Just a few minutes from the Well House, in the middle of an area that looks rundown and very basic are hidden gems – tiny cafes that jut onto the beach sand. Scattered along this area are several excellent surfboard hire/learn to surf locations.
Surfing in many parts of the world brings challenges and dangers that simply don’t exist in Sri Lanka. Warm tropical waters allow you to spend plenty of time practicing without getting cold. There are no sharks, jelly fish or strong currents to overcome as in Australia, Portugal or South Africa.
Instructors have taught hundreds, some thousands of beginners, guiding them through common pitfalls, teaching how to overcome common errors and offer excellent shortcuts to getting up and riding your first waves in the shortest possible time. You will of course get tired, from the joys of trying, paddling to the next wave to experience the exhilaration of that moment when the board under you allows you to glide effortlessly on gentle waves. Each wave seems to be calling you, begging you to allow it to carry you effortlessly to the shore.
After 2 hours in the water, your body is tired, you just need a nice snack or drink. Fortunately the casual cafés that line the Dewata beach, provide plenty of choice for food, atmosphere and drinks. Relax and watch other learners being put through their paces, helping to ‘lock in the learning’ that you have just done.
It has been so enjoyable you decide to return tomorrow. But for now, it is time to laze by The Well House pool and enjoy the delicious offerings you have come to love from the unique menu.
