Escape to a hidden paradise, a peaceful cove where calm water laps the edge of lush jungle along the base of Rumassala Sanctuary. It is an idyllic, calm ocean beach, a perfect place relax in serenity leaving behind the bustling energy of Galle town and Unawatuna beach.
Why not take a long beach walk where sand meets jungle? Be rejuvenated as your spirit becomes part of the natural world’s coral, rocky outcrops and sand that forms the shoreline. Secluded jungle nooks create personal hide away spaces, or bring goggles, fins and a snorkel to enjoy the world underneath the Indian Ocean as it softly laps the sand.
Jungle beach is a beloved picnic venue of locals, especially on monthly Poya (full moon) holidays and on Sri Lankan Independence Day, the 4th of February or Buddhist and the traditional New Year Day. The calm water is ideal for children and adults who are not competent swimmers. Local snacks and cool drinks are available from beachside shanties.
The walk to Jungle Beach from The Well House takes approximately 15 minutes, unless you strike up a conversation with nearby villagers, detour to the striking white Japanese Peace Pagoda and meet the monks who tend the property or take the long way around over the top of Rumassala Sanjeevani Mountain Sanctuary. The beach owes its seclusion to the lack of vehicular access. Everyone who visits must use the pathway that twists and turns through the jungle on its way to the ocean. The walk up the hill is a good exercise routine that many guests use every morning or evening to enjoy the cool jungle air or the inspirational sunsets over the ocean and Galle Fort’s Lighthouse.
Jungle beach can also be accessed by boat, a short trip from Unawatuna or from Galle. If you want more than a good swim, a tan and pure enjoyment, then Jungle Beach is a must visit location.
