For a strangely named bay, Unawatuna has events for every letter in its name. It is one of the most important tourism hubs in the whole of Sri Lanka, with steeply rising cliffs surrounding the reef which slows the Indian Ocean’s waves.
It is 5 minutes by road from The Well House, yet a much more interesting journey is over Rumassala Sanctuary. Tiny roads weave and bend through villages on their way around the rocky outcrops. Jungle interspersed with unique plants, coconuts and bananas and lush tropical gardens are the perfect environment for this walk. In 30 – 40 minutes you will arrive at the south-eastern end of the beach. Enjoy a fresh Tambili (orange) coconut, fresh, sweet jackfruit, mango, bananas or snacks freshly prepared by villagers for visitors who pass by their door.
Every type of café, store and store selling handcrafts, local clothing and daily services from ATMs, hairdressing, gifts and even a tea and spice speciality shop hems in Unawatuna’s narrow main street. Yoga and spas offer Ayurveda massage and treatments, whilst beach restaurant chairs and tables spill onto the sand alongside day beds beneath beach umbrellas.
Daytime activities range from scuba diving courses, surfing, boat cruises, café and restaurant dining, swimming and of course catching up on some reading in the sun. Afternoons offer glorious sunsets over the ocean whilst enjoying drinks at some of the bars and cafés. Take a late afternoon dip in the warm tropical waters, then reserve your dinner table for some excellent fresh fish dining on the sand.
Evenings is party-time with lots of choice for music, drinks and location. The hardest decision you will have to make is whether to party on with DJs in the warm tropical nights or relax with your family and friends by The Well House pool.
